Clean up – Exterior
- Clean the Paint Brushes and Rollers: Rinse the brushes and rollers with water or solvent, depending on the type of paint you used. For water-based paint, use water, for oil-based paint, use paint thinner. Clean the brushes and rollers until the water or solvent runs clear.
- Clean the Paint Trays and Buckets: Clean the paint trays and buckets with water or solvent, depending on the type of paint used. For water-based paint, use water, for oil-based paint, use paint thinner. Make sure to wash the trays and buckets thoroughly so that the paint does not dry and harden, making it difficult to clean.
- Store Your Paint: If there is leftover paint, transfer it to a clean, airtight container, such as a plastic or metal can. Label the container with the name of the paint, the date, and the type of paint. Store the container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
- Dispose of Waste Properly: Put all of the rags, paper towels, and any other waste materials that were used during the painting process into a sealed plastic bag. Dispose of the waste materials according to your local regulations. Do not throw paint, solvents, or other chemicals into the trash or down the drain.
- Put Away Your Tools: Clean and store your paint brushes, rollers, trays, buckets, and other tools in a dry place where they won’t be damaged. Make sure to allow the brushes and rollers to dry completely before storing them.
- Clean the Work Area: Clean up any paint splatters or drips from the ground, driveway, sidewalks, or other surfaces. Use soap and water or solvent, depending on the type of paint used, to remove the paint. Be sure to rinse the surface thoroughly to remove all of the soap or solvent.
- Inspect the Work Area: After the paint has dried and the work area has been cleaned, inspect the painted surface to make sure that the paint has adhered properly and that there are no drips, runs, or sags. If necessary, touch up any areas that need attention.
By following these steps, you can ensure that the process of cleaning up after painting the exterior of your home is done efficiently and effectively, leaving you with a beautifully painted exterior.
